Matthew specialises in criminal law, both prosecuting and defending with a specific emphasis on sexual offences and complex fraud matters. He is a Grade 4 CPS prosecutor and is on the panel of approved advocates for prosecuting rape cases and is recommended by The Legal 500 2018 as being "well known for high-profile fraud and sexual offences cases," whilst a previous edition reported that "he can be trusted to act in all criminal cases however serious."

Chambers UK 2022 states: Matthew maintains a strong reputation for his serious crime practice both as a Grade 4 CPS Prosecutor and as Defence Counsel. "He has particular expertise in cases concerning financial crime and sexual offences." and notes his strengths: "He is very hard-working, takes on difficult cases and does it calmly and well.  He always turns up well prepared and takes the right points in the right tone."

A hard-working and dedicated barrister, Matthew is a member of the Criminal Bar Association and a member of the Wales and Chester Circuit. Some of his recent cases include defending the lead defendant in the largest counterfeit clothing operation prosecuted in Wales. He also defended in a serious multiple complainant rape case that involved complex issues of disclosure and abuse of process. The case attracted significant national media coverage.

Matthew was educated at Devenport High School for Boys Grammar School before going on to study at Cardiff University, Inns of Court School of Law and Bristol University.
